FAQs

  • What is required of being a DJ?
You’ll need to sign up for a 2 hour (music) or 1 hour (talk) timeslot. It is assumed that you will spend additional hours each week curating your show and if we find you cannot put in the minimum amount of effort, then you’ll be moved from a weekly show to our substitute DJ list.
  • What does becoming a DJ entail?
To put it in list form the process goes as follows: (1) Application (2) Interview (3) Initial Training (to familiarize you with the equipment and studio) (4) Shadowing (1 hour) (5) Shadowing again (1 hour) (6) Begin your show No previous experience is needed to become a WDCE DJ. You can simply request our DJ application here. Once you have submitted the application a member of staff will contact you about whether or not you will get an interview.
  • Do I have to do a weekly show?
Nope. You can sign up for our sub list if you'd like to come on air occasionally. It's a great way to learn the ropes and figure out if this really is for you
  • Will I get a show right away?
It depends on when you're trying to get on air. We're always looking for late night (1am and later) and early morning (9am and earlier) DJs, so if you request one of those timeslots you're likely to get on air right away. Because we are a college radio station, we give preference to UR students when scheduling shows, but that doesn't mean that as a non-UR student you won't be scheduled. Our schedule changes drastically during winter and summer breaks, meaning community members will be more likely to get the timeslots they want during those times.
  • Do I have to do a music show?
During prime time (M-F 5p-11p) you do have to play music. Prior to that time and on weekends we do allow talk shows. We do limit the amount of talk shows we have each week, so the sooner you sign up the better.
  • Are there rules about what I can and cannot play?
We'll go more in depth with this when you come in for training, but essentially we do not allow any Top 40 music from the last 50 or so years. If you don't know what Top 40 is, check out Billboard. And then don't play anything from it.
